Nov 11, 2019 Christmas Presents are Changing
Christmas presents are changing. Welcome to the ‘the experience economy.’ What is that? It’s when people spend money on an experience rather than a tangible thing. My favorite gift last year didn’t come in a little blue box; it was a postcard announcing an Alaskan Cruise!
With it being the time of year when we start to make our purchases for the gift giving season you might want to consider adding in some experiences as well. For example how about tickets to the theatre, skydiving, or flights to some palm studded beach? With Black Friday sales around the corner I have a few recommendations to help you shop this holiday season all from the comfort of your own home – aka online.
Experienced Based Gifts
Black Friday always looms large this month and for a mother with 3 young kids the only way to shop is online. The deals are the same as in the store and you don’t have to deal with crowds. Yes Please! My favorite place to shop for experienced based gifts is Groupon’s Black Friday Deals. Starting around Nov. 15th Groupon posts different deals all month long. From Ancestry DNA kits, fit bits, food and wine bundles, local attractions, season passes, or some much needed pampering at a spa.
Last Year’s Groupon Black Friday had some great luggage sets, coffee variety sampler packs, fit bits, and wine bundles. Locally I found cosmetic procedures, endless kid activities for local museums, art classes, ghost tours, etc. And excursions that ranged from Yellow Stone to Hawaiian airline discounts.
For our travels we use and check Groupon regularly for discount tickets to museums, local theatres, and excursions. One of our favorite Groupons we bought is a guided tour we did to the Great Wall of China. Given the language barrier and inability to rent a car in China it was invaluable to have our driver Ken pick us up at our place, drive us there, and take us straight through the ticket process. It was stress free – which is huge when you have 3 little kids with you- and in my opinion necessary in order for us to have the experience we wanted. Not to mention the discount on top of it all.
We spent a year racking up experiences, with only a few souvenirs to show for it. So as you launch into the frenzy of holiday shopping, I challenge you to give what can’t fit in a box. Give a little life! With experiential purchases through Groupon you can score some great deals along with the benefit of shared family time. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. So I’m encouraging you to consider the gift of memories. This is the present that makes us feel most valued, educates us, and inspires us.
Isn’t this what the holidays are really about? Bringing people together and creating lasting memories to cherish through the decades.
