Oct 09, 2017 what’s a beach without a book
I was in Copenhagen when Teresa Richards emailed me about reviewing a Young Adult book series she wrote. They are modern twists based off of Hans Christian Anderson tales! In case you didn’t know Hans Christian Anderson is from Denmark and wrote many of his stories in Copenhagen. I love coincidences like this!
Needless to say, I was on board and read her first book Emerald Bound. It is a fun take on the tale the Princess and the Pea and I read it in the home country of the original writer of the tale!
It was a quick and fun read about Maggie Rhodes. A teenager that learns of the tales true roots; that go beyond a princess, a pea, and a tower of mattresses and into a story more nightmare than fairy tale.
Her sequel just came out, Topaz Reign. It is a fun twist on the Hans Christian Anderson tale Thumbelina. I was able to sit on the beaches of Cyprus and enjoy myself in true beach fashion. With a light read about another adventure for Maggie Rhodes!
These books are great for a young adult audience and the Kindle version (which I read) is very reasonably priced. If you would like a shot at reading these for free enter this GIVEAWAY! You can enter more than once, which betters your chances of winning!
Regarding where the idea for the series came from, I’m a little embarrassed to admit that it really started with a dream. I’d recently finished writing a different book, and was really excited about it. Then one morning I woke up from one of those dreams that make perfect sense while you’re in them but fall to pieces when you wake up. But it changed my direction.
I realized that one of the threads from the dream would make a really cool twist on the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. I love reading fairy tale retellings, and the idea of twisting one up that hadn’t been done before was so exciting. Immediately, the story began spinning to life inside my head, and I stopped thinking about that first book and started working on this one. Even once Emerald Bound was finished, I felt there was still so much more I wanted to see the characters do, and so many more places I could take it, that I knew I wanted to do another.
A few Fun Facts about the Author:
I grew up in California and I’m a weather snob.
I sing all the time, sometimes without realizing I’m doing so. It drives my family nuts, but they’re mostly used to it. When my kids have friends over, however, things get weird.
I love rain, but I hate snow.
I hate cooking. But I bake (and eat) chocolate chip cookies like a boss.
I don’t like wearing black. I need color in my life!!
