Feb 17, 2019 Why Taking a Break From Social Media Can Be Good
Recently I have received messages asking: what are we up to, why don’t we post as much, what is going on in our lives? We documented our travels almost daily on Social Media for over 54 weeks. It was a lot of fun. A lot of work. A lot of time. We naturally aren’t very active on Social Media but we wanted to show people the world through our families experiences. We also love feeling the community behind us that is loving and helpful. When we finished with full time travel we have still continued to travel every month. We are just as active as we’ve ever been . . . However, it is true that we don’t document and post all that much. We decided to become less active on Social Media about 6 months ago. Why?
1.To focus on our goals. We met one big life goal of traveling full time. We have a lot of other ambitions, like traveling full time again via the water! In order to meet our targets we need to be very specific about where we are putting our energy. So we’ve tried to balance our online living with the here and now. I love the voice that Social Media gives us all. But I also think it’s important to step back into present life with out documentation. Honestly we aren’t big consumers of Social Media. It isn’t something we naturally spend hours on. It is actually a lot harder for us to try and be active on it then it is for us to be less active. Just a personality thing I guess. So, basically we aren’t going anywhere. We will continue to post and make occasional videos (one being our home remodel) but it won’t be weekly like it use to be.
2. I really do love blogging. I will continue to blog – on my goal chart I put blog for at least 5 years, so far it’s been 3- this is my kind of space. However I have limited myself to one blog weekly. I was starting to feel worry and anxiety over what I should blog about, what should my next post be? I never want to burden my writing with the responsibility of trying please others. I want to write authentically. That’s what people deserve to read.
So what are we up to? Currently we are gearing up for 3 weeks of travel. We leave in 3 days! We are also in the thick of our home remodel. The place is all torn up and I am meeting several times a week with the designers and architects of the project. I am SOOOO excited for this space to come together for our family. I am also busy writing a book and Derek has invented something that is currently in production . . . sorry to leave you hanging on that last one for now.
I also feel like this whole post would be a lie if I didn’t address how social Media affects our Mental Health. I think it is no secret and enough studies have been done to show that Social Media is addicting. Several studies have also linked life satisfaction with social media use. The more we use social media the less happy we seem to be. I also feel hypocritical saying this because at the same time I want people on to read my blog, comment on it, or share it . . .
You become what you consume so how about I try to create the good so that you feel good? Deal?
